Good and bad factors of cosmetic surgery

Good and bad factors of cosmetic surgery  (November 2014)
I believe that cosmetic surgery is a personal option but in some cases it becomes a bad addiction. In the case of the personal option, i don't think that plastic surgery is necessarily a bad thing.
All human beings have some sense of insecurity and for some people that insecurity is their appearance. I think that plastic surgery is a self esteem booster, which a little boost is not a problem. For example, my mother's friend Valerie was self conscious about the size of her breast for twenty four years of her life. She would not go out in public with a bathing suit on, she would be very selective on the type of blouses she would wear, and she felt that men would not date her because of her breast size. She finally decided to pursue a breast augmentation.
Cosmetic Surgery
Afterwards, she says that she felt like a different woman. No longer was her self esteem low, but she actually felt good about herself. As Valerie describes, "This minor cosmetic surgery drastically changed my life." These circumstances where plastic surgery is minor but creates a positive change in a person's life are not bad. Also cosmetic surgery, in many cases, helps save people's lives. For example, a burn victim needs new skin on their face so that they will not bleed to death or a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer and has to remove her breasts in order to survive.

What is Hysteroscopy?

Hysteroscopy is a procedure that allows your doctor to look inside your uterus in order to diagnose and treat causes of abnormal bleeding. Hysteroscopy is done using a hysteroscope, a thin, lighted tube that is inserted into the vagina to examine the cervix and inside of the uterus. Hysteroscopy can be either diagnostic or operative.

What is diagnostic hysteroscopy?

Diagnostic hysteroscopy is used to diagnose problems of the uterus. Diagnostic hysteroscopy is also used to confirm results of other tests, such as hysterosalpingography (HSG). HSG is an X-ray dye test used to check the uterus and fallopian tubes. Diagnostic hysteroscopy can many times be done in an office setting.

Additionally, hysteroscopy can be used with other procedures, such as laparoscopy, or before procedures such as dilation and curettage (D&C). In laparoscopy, your doctor will insert an endoscope (a slender tube fitted with a fiber optic camera) into your abdomen to view the outside of your uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes. The endoscope is inserted through an incision made through or below your navel.

What is operative hysteroscopy?

Operative hysteroscopy is used to correct an abnormal condition that has been detected during a diagnostic hysteroscopy. If an abnormal condition was detected during the diagnostic hysteroscopy, an operative hysteroscopy can often be performed at the same time, avoiding the need for a second surgery. During operative hysteroscopy, small instruments used to correct the condition are inserted through the hysteroscope.
When is operative hysteroscopy used?

Your doctor may perform hysteroscopy to correct the following uterine conditions:
  • Polyps and fibroids — Hysteroscopy is used to remove these non-cancerous growths     found in the uterus.
  • Adhesions — Also known as Asherman’s Syndrome, uterine adhesions are bands of scar tissue that can form in the uterus and may lead to changes in menstrual flow     as well as infertility. Hysteroscopy can help your doctor locate and remove the adhesions.
  • Septums — Hysteroscopy can help determine whether you have a uterine septum, a malformation of the uterus that is present from birth.
  • Abnormal bleeding — Hysteroscopy can help identify the cause of heavy or lengthy     menstrual flow, as well as bleeding between periods or after menopause.

Does Baldness Come From the Mother's Father?

Baldness is a general term that describes unwanted hair loss. When the condition stems from genetic inheritance, it is called androgenetic alopecia. At one time, scientists believed that inherited baldness came from one particular side of your family tree. They now believe that you can inherit baldness from either side of your family.

Inherited Hair Loss Basics

Unwanted Hair Loss BaldnessAndrogenetic alopecia is also known as male or female pattern baldness. In men, the condition causes a loss of the front hairline and the eventual development of a horseshoe-shaped pattern in the remaining hair on the scalp. If you have female pattern baldness, you typically will not lose your front hairline. Rather, you will experience a thinning of hair that begins at the crown of your head and eventually progresses throughout your scalp. Unlike men, women with inherited baldness do not usually go completely bald.

The AR Gene

Inherited baldness is substantially determined by the actions of a gene called the AR gene, according to U.S. National Library of Medicine's Genetics Home Reference. This gene helps determine how your hair follicles respond to the presence of a hormone called dihydrotestosterone, or DHT. Your body creates DHT in your scalp when the male hormone testosterone -- which is found in both men and women -- interacts with an enzyme called Type 2 5-alpha reductase, the American Hair Loss Association reports. Once formed, DHT alters the size of your hair follicles and decreases the viability of your hair strands. Individuals with certain changes in their AR genes have an increased susceptibility to DHT's damaging effects.

Top Ten Worst Genetic Diseases

Inherited genetic diseases affect millions worldwide. Family health history is the biggest predictor of genetic disease. Research is ongoing to detect and treat genetic disease. The decision to be tested for genetic disease is often difficult and includes many moral and ethical issues. Genetic makeup passed on from parents and grandparents affects a person's life and the life of their own children. The worst genetic diseases are incurable.

Alcoholism
Considered a disease, addiction to alcohol is most likely passed down through genetic makeup. If one or both parents are addicted to alcohol, then the children of those parents appear to have a higher chance of being addicted to alcohol. As of 2010, no specific genes have been identified as the cause of alcoholism.

Breast and Colon Cancer
One in nine women has a chance to develop breast cancer. The BRCA1 and BRCA2 inherited genes predispose a woman to a greater chance of breast or ovarian cancer, but not all breast cancers are due to genetic reasons. A family history of colon cancer means there is a reason to believe it may be genetic. As with other cancers, genetic reasons may not be the only reasons for developing cancer.

Sickle Cell Disease
Having the single expression of the gene for sickle cell does not cause the disease. The gene evolved to protect people from malaria. However, getting the gene from both parents, a double dose causes the red blood cells to “sickle” spontaneously during a stress crisis. The sickled cells get stuck in small capillaries and destroy joints and organs. Eventually, the victim will die of organ failure.

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) Treatment

For millions of women suffering from polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), trying to conceive can be a heart-breaking experience. But a new procedure is making it easier for patients to get pregnant without hormone injections, meaning a decreased risk for certain complications.

“PCOS is an endocrine disorder where women don’t ovulate on a regular basis,” “It's usually characterized by having multiple little follicles in the ovaries that appear on ultrasound, or having irregular periods, coupled with elevated male hormone levels, or elevated androgen levels.”

“Usually women with … PCOS are the primary candidates for this procedure because they have lots of little immature follicles which lead to lots of little immature eggs. We then go ahead and harvest all these immature eggs, remove them, and then mature them in the petri dish,”

Getting Pregnant in Your 40s

The reality is, it is rare that women in their 40s naturally conceive—women 40-45 have about a 30 percent chance of getting pregnant over a one-year period and women over 45 have less than a 5 percent chance of conceiving naturally. Miscarriage rates are high: a 40-year-old has a 33 percent chance of miscarriage and women over 45 have a miscarriage rate as high as 50 percent or more.

Fertility Treatment in Your 40s

Even with fertility treatments, your odds of getting pregnant overall are not fantastic. But it certainly is not impossible either. In particular, slightly more than 50% of IVF cycles with donor eggs (what many of those celebrities are openly or not-so-openly relying on) result in a live birth, even up to age 50.

Hymen Reconstruction Surgery

In a world of extreme makeovers where human bodies are now fashioned to order, this may be the ultimate plastic surgery. It is for women only. It is veiled in secrecy. And it fixes a tiny part of the anatomy rarely mentioned in polite company.

You may know it by a variety of slang terms. Technically, it's the hymen, a thin membrane that partially covers the opening of the vagina. A girl who has never had sexual intercourse is supposed to have her hymen intact.

Now, a new surgical technique is giving girls with a past a new future.

"The hymen's a delicate membrane that separates girls from women. where, in a simple, half-hour operation procedure doctor can turns sexually experienced women into surgical virgins.

The surgery is called hymen restoration — a relatively simple procedure that stitches back together what a moment of passion might have shattered.

Here are several reasons why women request a hymenoplasty procedure. These include:

  • Cultural or religious reasons: In some cultures, a woman is physically inspected to make sure the hymen is intact
  • As part of the rape, incest, sexual abuse healing process: Some women view this as a way to empower themselves and symbolically restore something that was taken from them.
  • Injury to the hymen prior to marriage: Tampon use, vigorous exercise or sexual intercourse can cause a hymen to rupture.
  • Revirginization: Women who want to give their partner a unique gift.

Hair Loss Treatment
Try the following easy tips at home and see how effective they are in reducing hair loss!

  1. Hot oil treatments: Take any natural oil - olive, coconut, canola - and heat it up so that it is warm, but not too hot. Massage it gently into your scalp. Put on a shower cap and leave it on for an hour, then shampoo your hair.
  2. Natural juices: You can rub your scalp with either garlic juice, onion juice or ginger juice. Leave it on overnight and wash it thoroughly in the morning.
  3. Get a head massage: Massaging your scalp for a few minutes daily will help stimulate circulation. Good circulation in the scalp keeps hair follicles active. Circulation may be improved through massage by using a few drops of lavender or bay essential oil in an almond or sesame oil base.
  4. Antioxidants: Apply warm green tea (two bags brewed in one cup of water) on your scalp and leave this mixture on for an hour and then rinse. Green tea contains antioxidants which prevent hair loss and boost hair growth.
  5. Practice meditation: Believe it or not, most of the times, the root cause for hair loss is stress and tension. Meditation can help in reducing that and restore hormonal balance.
  6.  Coconut Milk: Coconut milk is among the richest sources of tissue-nourishing, plant derivatives. Grind the grated coconut and squeeze it to remove its milk. Massage coconut milk on the scalp to reduce hair fall.
  7. Aloe Vera: Aloe Vera juice is very effective to stop hair loss. Pure aloe gel can be applied directly to the scalp. This is helpful for preventing hair loss due to irritated, dry or infected scalp. Aloe Vera balances the pH level of scalp. After massaging the head with aloe gel, wait for few hours and then wash the hair with lukewarm water. You should do this twice a week for best results.
  8. Neem Treatment: Neem is one of the most popular herbs in the country! It has many benefits, both health and beauty. And when it comes to beauty, it has some very effective hair benefits too. The astringent property of neem helps to keep lice and dandruff at bay.
How to use:
  • Boil neem leaves in water until the water level falls to half its initial quantity and then cool it.
  • Rinse out your hair with the mixture once a week.

  1. Amla: Boil dried amla in coconut oil till the oil turns black in color. Massage your scalp with this oil. This is an effective and very easy home remedy to check hair loss. There are also other ways where we can include amla in our hair care routine.

Here are some methods to use amla effectively to control hair fall:

  • Use amla and shikakai powder than you can buy in ayurvedic stores. Mix them both and make a paste. Apply this to your hair. Leave it on for a few minutes and wash off after a few minutes. Caution: If you have dry hair, skip shikakai.

  • The most effective method to reduce hair fall is to drink amla and shikakai juice. Yes, it tastes terrible but if you skip the preference of the taste buds once a day, the results will definitely be worth it.

  1. Healthy and Nutritious Diet: All said and done, jut these simple precautions are not going to help. It will always hold true that only when you are healthy inside will your hair be healthy too. Your hair is made up of proteins and is alive at the roots. And like any other living it also requires nutrients to remain healthy and grow. There are a few things that you can add to your diet to ensure that you intake sufficient quantities of these nutrients.

  • First and foremost will be proteins of course. They are the building blocks of the hair shaft after all.
  • The next in the list will be vitamins. The vitamins that are essential for the hair are Vitamin A, B complex, C, and E. Each of these performs a significant role. Vitamin B complex is most popularly known for its importance in the hair growth and hair fall control. Vitamin C prevents premature graying.
  • Last but not the least, Iron. Deficiency of iron can lead to severe hair fall, which is why women suffering from anemia exhibit a great amount of hair fall.

Cosmetic Surgery and Procedures - Surgery Options

Cosmetic Surgery and Procedures - Surgery Options

There are many cosmetic surgery options to improve or change your face and body. When you talk to your surgeon, be open about what you want, but be willing to listen to his or her recommendations. Your surgeon may recommend a different procedure to achieve a similar result.

Often a less invasive or more isolated procedure will do as well as a more involved surgery. And in some cases, your doctor may recommend one of a number of skin care treatment products or non-surgical cosmetic procedures to treat your problem.

For many surgical procedures, including cosmetic surgery, the method of choice has shifted from traditional open surgery to the use of less invasive techniques. Minimally invasive surgery is surgery done with the aid of a viewing scope and specially designed surgical instruments. The scope allows the surgeon to perform major surgery through several tiny openings without the need for a large incision.

These minimally invasive alternatives usually result in less pain, less scarring, and a quicker recovery for the patient, as well as reduced health care costs. In fact, operations and therapeutic procedures performed through smaller incisions are becoming standard in surgical medicine.

In cosmetic surgery, minimally invasive proce
dures use newer technologies, such as a laser, to perform procedures that once required extensive surgery and recovery time. Today's plastic surgery have available a variety of tools and techniques that make procedures more accessible and affordable.

Common cosmetic procedures

  • Laser resurfacing uses a laser light to heat, damage, or destroy the upper layers of the skin. This can tighten the skin or cause new skin to grow. It is typically used to remove or improve the appearance of wrinkles, brown spots, shallow scars (from acne, surgery, or trauma), and sometimes, the appearance of small veins. Tattoos are removed with surgery or a laser that breaks down the color into fragments. These fragments are removed by your immune system.
  • Chemical peel uses a chemical solution to remove the top layers of skin, allowing new skin to grow. It is most often used to remove wrinkles, superficial skin growths, shallow scars, pigment changes in the skin, and other skin problems.
  • Dermabrasion uses a fine wire brush or a diamond wheel with rough edges to remove the upper layers of the skin, allowing new skin to grow. It may be used to treat acne scars and wrinkles around the mouth or to treat an enlarged nose (rhinophyma) caused by rosacea (facial inflammation and redness).
  • Microdermabrasion uses a different technique to treat just the top layers of the skin.
  • Filler injections are used to smooth wrinkles or pitted scars in the skin. They are also used to make the lips fuller. Fillers can restore volume and structure that is lost due to age or weight loss treatment. When injected under the skin, a filler raises or puffs up that area. This goes away with time.
  • Botox injections use a protein that weakens the muscles of the face to reduce wrinkles. The effect is temporary, lasting about 3 to 4 months.
  • Sc reduces or removes the appearance of small varicose veins and spider veins. In sclerotherapy, a chemical is injected into a vein to damage and scar the inside lining of the vein, which causes the vein to close.
  • Laser hair removal and electrolysis permanently remove unwanted hair such as facial hair. In laser hair removal, light treatments are used to heat and destroy hair follicles. This reduces the number of body hairs. In electrolysis, an electric current is applied to the hair root, which heats and destroys the hair follicle. Hair is not able to grow back in this area.
  • Medical tattooing uses tattoo ink to change the look of a medical problem. For example, it can be used after breast surgery to create the look of a darker nipple and areola. Medical tattooing can also be used to darken white skin patches (vitiligo) and scarred skin.
  • Face-lift (rhytidectomy) removes excess skin and fat and tightens the muscles to smooth the face. Improvement is especially seen along the jawline and in the neck.
  • Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) removes excess skin, fat, and muscles from the eyelids to correct drooping eyelids and remove bags and puffiness. Surgery may be done on the upper and lower lids.
  • "Nose job" (rhinoplasty) reshapes the nose by removing or rearranging its cartilage and bones. Rhinoplasty is done to change the appearance of your nose, improve breathing and nasal function, or achieve a combination of both.
  • Breast enlargement (augmentation) places an implant under the breast tissue or the chest muscle to make the breast larger.
  • Breast reduction removes excess breast tissue and skin to reshape and lift the breast. Women may seek breast reduction to change their appearance, reduce back pain, and reduce limitations of activities caused by large breasts.
  • Liposuction uses suction, ultrasound, or laser to remove stubborn fat that has not gone away with a healthy weight loss diet and exercise. For women, this can be on the outer or inner thighs, neck, upper arms, belly, knees, and hips. For men, this can be on the waist, belly, neck, breasts, or back.
  • "Tummy tuck" (abdominoplasty) removes excess skin and fat from the abdominal area and tightens abdominal muscles. When a large weight loss or several pregnancies leave behind extra folds of skin, some people use this surgery for a flatter, smoother stomach. As with liposuction, the purpose of a tummy tuck is to reshape the area rather than to reduce body weight.
  • Varicose vein surgery removes large varicose veins. During varicose vein surgery, an incision is made over the varicose vein, and the vein is tied off and either left in place or removed. But newer therapies for vein stripping include foam sclerotherapy and laser or radiofrequency probes that use heat to destroy varicose veins.
  • Hair transplant surgery reduces the appearance of bald spots or hair loss by moving hair from one part of the head to another.
